Augustine
bishop of Hippo
Worth knowing
- Born at Thagaste in North Africa; a professor of rhetoric before he was anything else. Bishop of Hippo Regius from 395 until his death.
- The Confessions is addressed to God rather than to a reader, which is what makes it strange and what makes it work. It is often called the first Western autobiography.
- He is the latest writer in the game by well over a century — he was born a generation after the Council of Nicaea had already met.
- He died in 430 while the Vandals were besieging his city.
