Athenagoras

of Athens

Worth knowing

  • He introduced himself as "Athenian, philosopher, Christian", in that order, and wrote like all three.
  • His Embassy was addressed to the emperors Marcus Aurelius and Commodus around A.D. 177.
  • It answers the three charges everyone brought against Christians: that they were atheists, that they ate people, and that they slept with their mothers and sisters. He takes each one seriously and takes it apart.
