Matthew

Worth knowing

  • A tax collector at Capernaum whom Jesus called to follow him (Matthew 9:9), and one of the Twelve.
  • Early church writers credit him with the first Gospel. Papias, around A.D. 110, says Matthew compiled the sayings of Jesus in the Hebrew language.
  • His Gospel keeps pointing back to the Old Testament with the words "that it might be fulfilled." It argues that Jesus is the one the prophets were waiting for.

“Go to the sea, cast a hook, and take up the first fish that comes up. When you have opened its mouth, you will find a stater coin.”

Matthew 17:27 (WEB).
