The Macedonians

Worth knowing

  • A party named after Macedonius, bishop of Constantinople. Their opponents called them the Pneumatomachi, the Spirit-fighters.
  • Many of them accepted Nicaea's teaching about the Son, or something close to it, but denied that the Holy Spirit is God.
  • The Council of Constantinople answered them in 381 by adding to the creed that the Spirit is "the Lord and giver of life", worshipped and glorified together with the Father and the Son.
