Justin Martyr

Worth knowing

  • Born at Flavia Neapolis in Samaria to pagan parents. He worked through the philosophical schools one at a time before becoming a Christian, and never took off the philosopher's cloak afterwards.
  • He taught in Rome and wrote openly to the emperor. He was tried before the prefect Rusticus and beheaded around A.D. 165 — the name is a description of how he died.
  • His most generous idea is the "seed of the Word": whatever was rightly said by anyone, anywhere, already belongs to Christians.
