John called the whole thing the Fount of Knowledge and built it in three parts: the philosophy a reader needs first, then a catalogue of every heresy he could find, then the Exposition of the faith itself. The last chapter of the middle part is the earliest substantial Christian account of Islam by a named author, written by a man who had served in a caliph’s treasury.
