Warfield held the Princeton chair for thirty-four years and wrote more on the doctrine of Scripture than any American before him. His position is not that the Bible fell out of the sky: the human authors are everywhere visible — their vocabulary, their sources, their circumstances — and it is nonetheless, in the same words, the utterance of God. He argued it against exactly the critical school in the hall across the road, and he argued it patiently, one journal article at a time, for a generation.
