Faith and justification are in here, which the Theses were silent about. The case has stopped being a request for clarification.

Slower and much less read. A pamphlet crosses a country in a fortnight; a treatise with footnotes does not.

He posted the Theses for a debate and then, when the debate did not happen, wrote the debate himself: seven months of explanations, sent to Rome with a covering letter putting himself at the pope’s disposal. “I am still in the order,” it says in effect, “and I will be corrected.” It is the last document of the argument in which that was still an available thing to say.
