Clement of Alexandria will not treat “we have always done it” as an argument, because it is not one — it is a current, and the answer to a current is to name it. He does that with Homer: custom is the headland, the whirlpool, the Sirens’ song. Then he takes Odysseus lashed to the mast and hands the picture back with the mast turned into a cross. The Greeks are not being mocked here. They are being read.
