Bavinck published this and Christianity and Science in the same year, 1904, four years before the Stone Lectures, and it does a narrower job than either: it asks what a Christian has to say about knowing, about being, and about doing, and argues that the three answers have to hold together or none of them stands. Its diagnosis of the age is the one the rest of this area walks through — a self at war with itself, freed from every outside authority and no quieter for it. No English translation existed until 2019.
