The Shepherd of Hermas
Hermas of Rome
Visions, mandates, similitudes. Popular, odd, earnest.
Every stat is a checkable fact about the actual book, not a designer's mood. Bars are drawn against the highest value any book reaches.
The game's own explanation, as a reader sees it in the backpack.
The Shepherd persuades through visions and parables, not arguments — low Contend; it was never a debater.
The Shepherd’s Greek text runs out before the ending, which survives only in Latin translation. A patched text defends less surely.
In the second century the Shepherd was a genuine bestseller — it was even copied into Codex Sinaiticus alongside Scripture. Widely known then and remembered now, it takes the debate floor quickly.
By levelling up. A book that develops keeps what it knew and learns the rest on its new schedule.

How to read these. In Scholar’s Dream, books argue with each other. Each thing a book can do in a debate is a move, and most moves carry a real quotation — the words the book puts on the table when it uses that move.
Strong against lists the opposing books and arguments a move was written to answer. Used against one of them, it hits much harder than usual: ×2 means twice the normal force, ×4 four times. It is the game’s way of saying: this is the sentence that answers that argument. Open an entry to read why.
“dost thou not see in front of thee a great tower being builded upon the waters, of glistening square stones?” — and the tower, the vision explains, is the Church.

In the gameThe Shepherd’s great image — vivid when it lands, easy to talk past.
“He gave him no answer, not even one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.”
Matthew 27:14 (WEB); cf. Isaiah 53:7.
In the gameSay nothing. Convinces no one — but the next argument lands harder. Raises the user’s Contend, after the pattern of Christ’s silence before his accusers.
The passages the Scriptorium holds on screen, word for word from a public-domain translation. Written in Koine Greek.
“First of all, believe that God is One, even he who created all things and set them in order, and brought all things from non-existence into being, who comprehends all things, being alone incomprehensible.”
Shepherd of Hermas, Mandate 1.1 (trans. Lightfoot, public domain, lightly modernized).
“Do you not see in front of you a great tower being builded upon the waters, of glistening square stones?” … “The tower which you see building is myself, the Church, which was seen of you both now and aforetime.”
Shepherd of Hermas, Vision 3.2[10].4; 3.3[11].3 (trans. Lightfoot, public domain, lightly modernized).
“Hear then why the tower is builded upon waters: it is because your life is saved and shall be saved by water. But the tower has been founded by the word of the Almighty and Glorious Name, and is strengthened by the unseen power of the Master.”
Shepherd of Hermas, Vision 3.3[11].5 (trans. Lightfoot, public domain, lightly modernized).
“You know that you, who are the servants of God, are dwelling in a foreign land; for your city is far from this city… Therefore, instead of fields, buy souls that are in trouble, as each is able, and visit widows and orphans, and neglect them not.”
Shepherd of Hermas, Parable 1.1[50].1–8 (trans. Lightfoot, public domain, lightly modernized).
“This world is winter to the righteous, and they are not distinguishable, as they dwell with the sinners. For as in the winter the trees, having shed their leaves, are alike, and it is not distinguishable which are withered and which alive, so also in this world neither the just nor the sinners are distinguishable, but they are all alike.”
Shepherd of Hermas, Parable 3.1[52].2–3 (trans. Lightfoot, public domain, lightly modernized).
Hermas of Rome, written in Greek and probably in stages, c. A.D. 90–150. Five Visions, twelve Mandates, ten Parables. A bestseller in the second century — copied into Codex Sinaiticus itself — and never canonical.
Mandate 1.1 is among the clearest early statements of creation out of nothing: God brought all things from non-existence into being.
The winter image in Parable 3 is the book at its best. In this world you cannot tell the living tree from the dead one. Summer settles it.
