Edwards wrote it after the Great Awakening, when both the enthusiasts and the sceptics needed answering at once. His conclusion sits between them: real religion is not cool assent and it is not worked-up emotion, but affections — the heart moved, because it has been given eyes to see something true. The twelve signs he ends with are all about fruit, and William James would quote him for it a century and a half later, missing the half about the root.
