Read that first line again and hear what it does. Every attribute belongs to the Creator — he hung the earth, he fixed the heavens — and Melito turns each one into the sentence of his execution. The one who hung it is hanging.

This reading is shorter than the others on purpose, and the reason is worth knowing. On the Pascha was lost for about fifteen hundred years and came back only when papyri were published from 1940 onward. Every English translation of it is therefore modern and still in copyright — so unlike every other book on your shelf, we cannot set long passages of it in front of you.

A book can be recovered and still not be freely readable. Melito waited fifteen centuries to be found, and then arrived just late enough that the law had something to say about who may print him.

Eusebius preserves a list of Melito’s many other works. Almost all of them are still lost.
