Alvaro studied under the same teacher as Eulogius, vowed lifelong friendship with him as a young man, and outlived him. His complaint that Córdoba’s brightest young Christians could recite Arabic verse and could not write a decent Latin letter is not a side note — it is his diagnosis of what actually happened to the community, and it is sharper than anything the council said.
